Quick Poll Results: Manipulation Vs. Influence

Poll results have been tabulated!  We asked: “What’s the difference between manipulation and influence?”  There were no write-in answers registered in the “Other” category.

63% Answer 1: Manipulation involves clandestine motives while influence is completely transparent.
25% - Answer 2: There is little to no difference between influence and manipulation.
12% - Answer 3: Influence stops working the moment your true motives are revealed.
0% - Answer 4: Influence requires formal power or authority while manipulation merely requires stealth.

The Quick Poll responses from our Blog Survey were added to a larger corporate survey yielding a total respondent pool of 340. Most respondents indicated that when it comes to influence transparency is a key differentiator (Answers 1& 2). All respondents indicated that influence does not require formal power (Answer 4). A full quarter of respondents didn’t see any difference between the two approaches to inducing a behavior change (Answer 3).

Follow-Up Questions - How does this compare with your experience? Do you have any examples or stories that relate to the topic? What surprised you about the responses? What didn’t surprise you? What are possible implications? Why might this be significant? What conclusions are you tempted to explore?
